Five Things to Know About Red Dead Redemption MultiplayerDay one of Red Dead Redemption (RDR) and all is going well. I?ve played through a couple of hours of the story; trying not to get distracted by the local wildlife?I just can?t seem to stop killing deer?it?s becoming a sickness. Well, after massacring a nomadic family of CG Bambi I decided to go into the multi-player world of RDR. I played 5 hours of multi-player last night and I have come up with a few tips and what you should know about the multiplayer system in RDR.
1) The multiplayer is a little broken right now. I am sure that Rockstar is tweaking things so don?t get your panties in a wad, but if you are expecting to saddle up and ride into the sunset with your posse fully intact, don?t. I tried linking up to 5 friends last night and invariably one would get kicked, or not be able to connect. We?re not complaining, at least not yet, but this is a consideration, if you get easily frustrated, wait a week or so for things to cool off.
2) This is the Wild West: Popping into the free-roam mode of RDR is kind of like stepping off the stage coach smack dab in the middle of the OK Corral. There will be roaming bands of killers out there gunning for fresh meat. Take in the lay of the land; see if there are any posses nearby because they will be gunning for you. It?s kill or be killed out there, so if you can drag a few partners onto the field do so, there is strength in numbers. My only concern about this is the potential for griefing. Nothing can ruin an experience for you more than constantly getting killed and re-spawning over and over again. This is also the case with the ?gang hideout? missions that are part of the multiplayer. Me and a buddy were trying to run through this hideout and while that was going on another group came up and crawfished us. They started shooting us in the back and making an ass out of themselves. Normally, this wouldn?t bother me that much but we were almost done with the mission and in the end didn?t make it. If you are just wanting to just mess around with friends set up a private mach, believe me it?s less headache, you still get a lot of experience points, and much more fun.
3) Tips for Gold Rush: So far I have liked the Gold Rush game type. This is multi-player mode where there are bags of gold lying around a map and the goal is to pick them up and run to a lock box and throw them in before someone kills you and takes it. Here are a few tips to make sure you are victorious. First thing is that the Shotgun is king. Try and pick it up early and memorize where you found it. It kills the opposition in one hit at close range. The second thing is either camp or watch out for campers. I cannot tell you how many times I would be running to the lock box with two bags of gold and was ambushed at the last second. The last thing is that the game starts out with a ?Mexican Standoff? where you are all in a circle waiting for the game to start. When the timer runs out, its shoot or be shot. If you are the last one standing after the lead is thrown make your way to pick up the best guns on the map. You have a few minutes while everyone is re-spawning.
4) There are several ambient challenges available to get when in free-roam mode. Included are hunting, survivalist, and shooting challenges as well as the ?public enemy? challenges based on taking on the law in and around New Austin. These challenges give you XP so start racking up the points and become a legend in your own mind.
5) My fifth and final tip has to do with the achievements in this game. There are several based on the multiplayer that you need to be aware of. If you wait too long, you might have trouble finding people to help you out with them so here they are. Get them early, and you won?t have to worry about them later on in the game cycle.
